Serra da Gardunha in central Portugal was much affected by fires in 2003 and 2005. This reforestation project is focused on re-establishing sustainable mountain forests in Fundão which have supported the lifestyle, identity and ecosystem of Serra da Gardunha. Serra da Gardunha in central Portugal was much affected by fires in 2003 and 2005. This reforestation project is focused on re-establishing sustainable mountain forests in Fundão which have supported the lifestyle, identity and ecosystem of Serra da Gardunha. Through this effort, not only will the habitat be regenerated, but the wildlife that once inhabited this area-mammals, birds, insects, reptiles, amphibians, and fish-will be gradually reintroduced. Broadleaf trees, such as Chestnut, Oak and Cork Oak, were planted alongside rarer local species.
